UPHOLSTERY TASTER COURSE:
Designed as a short introduction to upholstery over 4 separate evenings.
Due to the time constraints, we recommend the following items to learn on: Drop-in dining chair, modern footstool or some scatter cushions.
Everyone provides and then works on their own piece of furniture and you’ll be taught all the various techniques and tips necessary to re-upholster your piece, so you finish the course with your own newly upholstered piece of furniture, designed and created by you!
We’ve teamed up with an inspirational local caner, Ingrid Chen, who’s a fantastic teacher and famously did the S Chair with Tom Dixon! Her first set of caning classes that Ingrid ran at SDR were hugely popular and produced some fantastic caned chairs!
There are 5 distinct stages to learn in the caning process and these 5 individual processes will be taught across the 6 classes. The course will be run on a Tues evening and will start at 18.30. Ingrid will teach for 2 hours and you can then stay for an extra half an hour to practice. So each class will run from 18.30 to 21.00. We have added a break over Xmas between week 4 and 5 to give any necessary extra time needed for people to catch up so that everyone can do the finishing stage together in week 5 and 6
CUSHION MAKING AND SEWING:
During the course you will be taken step by step through all the different sewing techniques and various finishes, giving you the knowledge and experience to go on and make a variety of different cushions for yourself.
By the end of the course you will have completed 2x scatter cushions (or box cushions) with zips, piping and your choice of finish.
WHAT: Laura Lees and Shoreditch Design Rooms have designed an exclusive short course where participants will be able to customise a unique piece of upholstered furniture using freehand machine embroidery, hand embroidery and surface textiles to create a totally bespoke, individual design.
In a relaxed, friendly and creative environment:
Please don’t let your skills inhibit your imagination, complete beginners are welcome, just bring an open mind!
There will be an abundance of fabric and templates for you to choose from to create your embroidered applique as well as threads, trims and tricks of the trade.
